The Final Fate of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars: Collapse to a Black Hole?
نویسنده
چکیده
Coalescing compact binaries with neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH) components are important sources of gravitational waves for the laser-interferometer detectors currently under construction, and may also be sources of gamma-ray bursts at cosmological distances. This paper focuses on the final hydrodynamic coalescence and merger of NS–NS binaries, and addresses the question of whether black hole formation is the inevitable final fate of these systems.

Effect of Differential Rotation on the Maximum Mass of Neutron Stars: Realistic Nuclear Equations of State
The merger of binary neutron stars is likely to lead to differentially rotating remnants. In this paper, we survey several cold nuclear equations of state (EOSs) and numerically construct models of differentially rotating neutron stars in general relativity. For each EOS we tabulate maximum allowed masses as a function of the degree of differential rotation. We also determine effective polytrop...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملThe Final Fate of Coalescing Compact Binaries: from Black Hole to Planet Formation
Coalescing compact binaries are thought to be involved in a wide variety of astrophysical phenomena. In particular, they are important sources of gravitational radiation for both ground-based and space-based laser-interferometer detectors, and they may be sources of supernova explosions or gamma-ray bursts. Mergers of two white dwarfs may produce neutron stars with peculiar properties, includin...
متن کاملDeci Hertz Laser Interferometer Can Determine the Position of the Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars within an Arc Minute a Week before the Final Merging Event to Black Hole
It may be possible to construct a laser interferometer gravitational wave antenna in space with hrms ∼ 10 at f ∼ 0.1Hz in ∼ 2020. This deci hertz antenna may be called DECIGO/BBO, which stand for DECi hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory and Big Bang Observer, respectively. The analysis of 1-10 years observational data of the coalescing binary neutron stars or black holes at the ...
متن کاملCoalescing Binary Neutron Stars
Coalescing compact binaries with neutron star or black hole components provide the most promising sources of gravitational radiation for detection by the LIGO/VIRGO/GEO/TAMA laser interferometers now under construction. This fact has motivated several different theoretical studies of the inspiral and hydrodynamic merging of compact binaries. Analytic analyses of the inspiral waveforms have been...
